A Quick Message to My Allies on How to Train a Dragon Called Ego…

Some of you are still in a battle with friends and family. I see it. I've experienced the challenge and pain of that reality too. ⠀

After you've heard it for the umpteenth time, I invite you to try a new strategy with your peeps, depending on how their ear is trained to hear. Invite them to be a source of solution in the way that's true for them.⠀

1. Will you co-create a society that provides safety and equality for us all? What does your first step in that look like? By when will you have that action completed?⠀

OR⠀

2. Tell me what you can do today to uplift the black community agenda THEN talk to me about why all lives matter, etc. ⠀

OR ⠀

3. How does solving the problem you mentioned align to the objective we're trying to achieve? Where can we agree?⠀

They are a broken record because they aren't being heard, are reacting out in fear, or are blinded by their bias. It's what has them go out of their way to contribute irrelevant, oppositional points of view. Remember that people are afraid and we've been in crisis and chaos all year. Conversation can only happen if you meet them where they are before you rattle their cage. ⠀

Be careful not to argue with ego. Being distracted by it's noise throws off equilibrium. ⠀

I use neutral illustrations or colloquialisms to emphasize my point so they can hear without being guarded. That's the only way dialogue can exist. ⠀

Examples: ⠀

Personally, I feel like grass shouldn't be growing between slabs of cement in driveways. It looks stupid! But I can respect the architect's idea and talent. I align myself to watch where I walk as I enter your house. Why would I stand outside and argue the point instead of coming in? ⠀ ⠀
If you are my ally, it looks like this... Next time the President of our nation says something like... "when the looting starts the shooting starts", then your response to that will be to stand beside me when I say, "well then knuck if you buck!" ⠀

I can say the same thing in many different ways.⠀
